Arsenal vs. Brentford History

The mercurial rise of Brentford in recent seasons should never be underplayed. The West London side were playing in the fourth tier of English football as recently as 2009, but solid investment has helped develop the club into one fighting for a place in the top half of the Premier League table.

Their rise has been aided by Thomas Frank’s stint in charge, with the German taking charge at the Brentford Community Stadium in October 2018. In his second season in charge, he led the club to the play-offs, where they were unsuccessful, and a year later, they triumphed at Wembley Stadium against Swansea City.

Against the odds, Brentford finished their first Premier League season in 13th place and, in 2022/23, ended in ninth place, beating champions Manchester City in their final game of the season.

Arsenal finished 2022/23 in second place, having led the way for much of the campaign, and as such, anything less than three points from the visit of Brentford would be considered a failure by the club and their passionate supporters.

Arsenal vs. Brentford Head to Head

When these two sides met in February 2023, they played out an entertaining draw that became more well-known for a VAR error that gifted the away side a point that impacted Arsenal’s unlikely Premier League title chase.

Recently acquired Belgian Leandro Trossard had given the home side the lead after 66 minutes, only for Ivan Toney to score eight minutes later, albeit the officials failed to note an obvious offside decision prior to the England international scoring.

A year earlier, goals from Emile Smith Rowe and Buyako Saka gave Arsenal a two-goal lead before the Bees scored a consolation through Christian Norgaard.

Brentford and Arsenal have not met that many times, with the last time the two clubs played each other in the league prior to this occasion being in October 1946.

In September 2018, Brentford met Arsenal in the League Cup, with Danny Welbeck scoring a brace and Alexandre Lacazette scoring in the final minute, and Alan Judge replying for Brentford in a 3-1 third-round win.
