Liverpool won this cup twice under Gerard Houllier, first in 2001 when the Reds captured a treble of cups – also winning the FA Cup and UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) – with another League Cup title two years later.

Success in this competition became scarce for LFC over the next 20 years. Legendary player Kenny Dalglish took up a second spell as manager at Anfield in 2011 and Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez and co. subsequently drove their team to the final 12 months later, and went on to beat Cardiff City on penalties at Wembley.

In 2022, Liverpool won a record 9th League Cup title with a penalty-shootout victory over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium. The Reds beat the same opposition two years later, when Virgil van Dijk netted the winning goal in a 1-0 triumph for Jürgen Klopp's side.

Some that come to mind include the League Cup final of 2003. Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen were on target as the Reds overcame arch rivals Manchester United, 2-0, at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

The 2022 final saw very little separating the sides as Liverpool and Chelsea both failed to score in regular time as well as extra-time. Every outfield player from either team buried their spot-kick, as did Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Chelsea goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga blazed his effort over the crossbar as Jürgen Klopp's men won 11-10 in the shootout.
