Norwich City vs Southampton History
1902 was the year Norwich City was formed, 17 years after the founding of Southampton FC. Despite being the younger of the two clubs Norwich managed to win a major honour before Southampton did, clinching the League Cup in 1962 in what was just the second edition of the tournament.
Southampton only celebrated a first major trophy in the 1975/76 season, almost a century after the club was formed. The Saints defeated Manchester United, 1-0, in the FA Cup final in front of 99,115 at Wembley Stadium.
In more recent times both Norwich City and Southampton have featured regularly in the Premier League. Norwich, however, have been labelled as a 'yo-yo club' due to their frequent movement between the top flight and the EFL Championship.

These teams shared a pitch for the first time back in the 1905/06 season, however it wasn't until 1920 when Norwich and Southampton met in the Football League for the first time. The Canaries and the Saints contested a maiden FA Cup tie during the 1926/27 campaign.
The 1991/92 season saw Norwich City and Southampton paired together in the FA Cup quarter-finals, with the tie forced to a replay following a 0-0 draw at The Dell. Norwich won the replay, 2-1, at Carrow Road but ultimately crashed out to Sunderland in the semi-finals.
In April 1994 these teams played out a nine-goal thriller at Carrow Road, ending 5-4 in favour of the visitors. Matt Le Tissier scored a hat-trick before Ken Monkou notched the winning goal for the Saints.
In more recent times, Southampton ran out 3-0 winners when visiting Norwich in June 2020 with this fixture played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions. Danny Ings, Stuart Armstrong and ex-Norwich winger Nathan Redmond were all on the scoresheet that day.

A handful of players have represented both Norwich and Southampton, namely:
• Andy Townsend left Norwich for Southampton in 1988, sealing a move worth a reported £300,000. The ex-Ireland midfielder played more than 150 times combined for the two teams.
• Nathan Redmond signed for Southampton in the summer of 2016, aged 22 at the time, following a three-year spell with Norwich. The one-cap England winger went on to play 232 times for the Saints before leaving the club in 2022.
• Angus Gunn first joined Norwich ahead of the 2017/18 season, on loan from Manchester City. 12 months later the goalkeeper switched to Southampton on a long-term deal, though he would later return to Norwich in 2021.
