Olympique Marseille History

Olympique de Marseille was founded towards the end of the 20th century and it has evolved into one of the most popular football clubs in France and across Europe.

Based in the city of Marseille, OM emerged as a frontrunner in French football during the 1920s, though it wasn't until the late 1960s and early 70s that the club enjoyed its first spell of dominance. This was short lived, however, with only limited success until Bernard Tapie was elected president of the club in 1986.

This signalled the start of a true golden period for Marseille, winning five consecutive League titles in the late 80s and early 90s. Les Phocéens also won the Coupe de France for a 10th time in 1989, and they next set their sights on achieving European prestige.

Marseille lost to Red Star Belgrade in the 1991 European Cup final, having overcome AC Milan and Spartak Moscow in the quarter- and semi-finals, respectively. At long last the French club captured continental glory in 1992/93, defeating AC Milan in the Champions League final. This was the first season of UEFA's premier club competition after it had rebranded from the European Cup to the Champions League.

Marseille Today

In recent times Marseille have struggled to stake a claim in Ligue 1, mainly due to the emergence of Paris Saint-Germain as the superior team in French football. After winning the league title in 1995, Marseille would achieve Ligue 1 honours only once more in 30 years, doing so in the 2009/10 campaign.

Success in the Coupe de France has also been few and far between, with Les Phocéens failing to reclaim the French Cup since 1989.

OM's ventures in Europe have also not proven very fruitful. Marseille reached the UEFA Cup final in 2004 and the Europa League final in 2018, but ultimately fell short against Spanish opposition on both occasions, as Valencia and Atletico Madrid came out on top at the expense of Marseille.

Marseille progressed to the latter stages of the Europa League in 2023/24, beating Villarreal in the Round of 16 and then Portuguese outfit Benfica in the quarter-finals. Marseille then faced Bergamo-based Atalanta in the semi-finals, with the first leg ending all square at the Stade Vélodrome.

Olympique Marseille Famous Footballers

Marseille have been represented by some elite talents over the years, with ex-France striker Jean-Pierre Papin one of the most revered figures in the club's history. Papin joined Marseille in 1986 and he went on to score 184 goals in 278 appearances for Les Phocéens, playing an integral role towards the team's bid for European glory in the late 80s and early 90s.

It was around this time that Marseille also acquired the likes of Abedi Pele, Marcel Desailly, Didier Deschamps and Germany forward Rudi Völler among others.

In the 2000s, young talents such as Didier Drogba and Franck Ribéry made a name for themselves before signing for Chelsea and Bayern Munich, respectively. Samir Nasri was another who gained plaudits during his time at the Vélodrome before he was prised away by Premier League side Arsenal.

Steve Mandanda spent 14 years as a Marseille player, during which time the French goalkeeper amassed a club record 613 appearances. Other high-profile stars in recent years have included Mathieu Valbuena, André-Pierre Gignac and Dimitri Payet.
