Supporters of both Southampton and Leeds United tend to show great levels of passion towards their respective teams, though admittedly neither club has achieved a fortune in terms of trophy success.

Leeds Utd are the more decorated club in terms of league titles, having won no fewer than three top-flight titles. The West Yorkshire outfit clinched a maiden First Division title in 1969 and followed that up with a second triumph five years later.

LUFC were once again crowned champions of England in 1991/92, in what was the final season before the Premier League era commenced. This came two decades after Leeds had hoisted the FA Cup for the first time, owing to a narrow 1-0 victory over Arsenal.

Southampton FC was founded back in 1885, some 34 years before the birth of Leeds Utd, but didn't celebrate a first major honour until the 1975/76 season. The Saints defeated Manchester United, 1-0, in the FA Cup final in front of 99,115 at Wembley Stadium.

In recent years Leeds and Southampton have featured regularly in the Premier League, although both teams were relegated to the EFL Championship in 2023.

The late Gary Speed scored six times in his 12 outings against Southampton as a Leeds player. The former Wales winger netted on each of his first three matches versus the Saints in the Premier League era.

A handful of players have represented both Leeds and Southampton, namely:

• Frazer Richardson graduated from the Leeds United Academy and went on to make 173 appearances for the senior team. The right-back switched to the south coast in 2010 and subsequently played 68 times for the Saints.

• Billy Sharp joined Southampton in January 2012, though the striker was subject to three loan moves away from St Mary's and made just 18 appearances before signing with Leeds in 2014. Sharp spent a single season at Elland Road, scoring 5 goals in 35 matches, before switching to MLS side Los Angeles FC.

• Alex McCarthy spent part of the 2011/12 season at Leeds, on loan from Reading. The goalkeeper signed for Southampton in the summer of 2016 and made his debut for England in November 2018.
