Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Sheffield United History

The first-ever meeting between these clubs was in 1892, in the FA Cup. This Second Round tie took place at Molineux Stadium as Wolves won and went on to progress to the last-eight, but lost to eventual runners-up Aston Villa.

The first league meeting(s) between Wolves and Sheffield Utd took place in the 1893/94 season, five years after the Football League was established. The teams produced a seven-goal thriller at Molineux, as the Blades earned a narrow victory.

Sheffield Utd beat Wolves in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 1901, on their way to reaching the final for a second time, but they were ultimately beaten by Tottenham Hotspur.

When Wolves and Sheffield Utd next shared a pitch in the FA Cup, in 1928, the latter had already lifted this trophy on four occasions. Sheffield United were the winners of this Fourth Round tie.

Wolves won the FA Cup for a third time in 1949, overcoming Leicester City in the final at Wembley, having earlier defeated Sheffield Utd in the Fourth Round.

This was followed by Wolves’ most fruitful spell in the club’s history. The West Midlands outfit captured the First Division title three times in the 50s before also collecting a fourth FA Cup crown in 1960.

Wolves and Sheffield Utd would continue to meet frequently in the top flight until both teams were relegated to the Second Division in 1976. They contested a fixture in the third tier of English football for the first time in 1988.

• Wolves acquired striker Sam Vokes from Bournemouth in 2008. The Wales striker subsequently made six loan moves away from the Molineux, including a brief spell at Sheffield Utd in 2011.

• Former Scotland international Kevin McDonald moved from Sheffield Utd to Wolves on a free transfer in 2013.

• Morgan Gibbs-White joined the Wolves Academy in 2008 and climbed the ranks to make his senior debut in early 2017. The attacking midfielder spent the 2021/22 season at Sheffield Utd, where he gained heaps of first-team exposure, before signing for Nottingham Forest in a deal worth an initial £25m.

These teams met in the EFL Championship as recently as 2017/18, in which Wolves won the league title and secured automatic promotion to the Premier League. In this particular fixture, Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota scored in a 3-0 victory for the home side.

Wolves and Sheffield Utd shared a top-flight fixture in 2019, for the first time in 43 years and their first-ever in the Premier League era. This also came just five years after they had both been playing in the third tier of the English football pyramid.

The 2020/21 campaign saw Wolves claim a slender 1-0 win in this league fixture.

In 2022, these teams met at Molineux in the FA Cup Third Round. Wolves won by three goals to zero with Portugal international Daniel Podence scoring twice.
