Atalanta BC History

Bergamo, a small town in the north of Italy, has a strong passion for football. At the beginning of the 20th century there were two clubs vying for the hearts of local fans. In 1907, Atalanta was founded by students from a local private school, and they chose the name of the Greek goddess known for her athletic prowess.

However, it was not the only team in town, as Bergamasca was then established four years later. The Italian Football Federation did not look favourably on this, allowing only one Bergamo-based club to compete professionally. It resulted in the merger that created Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio.

Atalanta is a staple on the Italian football scene, yet La Dea (the Goddess), as supporters refer to the team, have yet to truly make their mark in terms of silverware. The club's history stretches back more than 125 years, yet to this day Atalanta BC awaits a maiden league title.

Atalanta BC Today

The team loitered around mid-table in the early 21st century, and even dropped out of the top flight in 2003 and again at the end of the 2009/10 season. Since 2017, however, La Dea have consistently challenged towards the top of Serie A, regularly qualifying for European football.

Much of this came down to the continuity within the club, with Gian Piero Gasperini in charge of the Bergamo outfit for no fewer than eight full seasons. The Italian tactician was appointed ahead of the 2016/17 campaign and he has gone on to oversee more than 375 matches as Atalanta manager.

Atalanta claimed 3rd place in Serie A three seasons in a row, starting in 2018/19. La Dea scored a league-high 98 goals and lost only six games (fewer than any other team) in the 2019/20 campaign, yet still finished 5 points behind champions Juventus.

Atalanta made her debut in the UEFA Champions League in 2019, sharing a group with Manchester City, Shakhtar Donetsk and Dinamo Zagreb. Atalanta progressed to the knockouts and subsequently earned an impressive 8-4 aggregate win over Spanish side Valencia. La Dea would bow out at the quarter-finals, losing to eventual finalists Paris Saint-Germain.

The following season Atalanta were grouped with Liverpool, Ajax and Danish side FC Midtjylland. Gasperini's men once again advanced to the Round of 16, but crashed out to Real Madrid.

Atalanta participated in the Europa League in 2022, until exiting to RB Leipzig in the quarter-finals. Two years later La Dea advanced to the semi-finals courtesy of a precious 3-1 aggregate victory over Liverpool.

Atalanta BC Rivalries

The rivalry between Atalanta and Brescia stems from the middle ages after a land dispute created a rift between the club's respective cities. Neither side has forgotten about the issue and, almost 1,000 years later, tensions are still rife when the two clubs meet. Friction is always high when the teams from Lombardy face off. Previous fixtures have been postponed due to incidents in the stands. This passion also translates onto the pitch, where players are ready to put everything on the line for victory.

This is not the only rivalry, though, as Atalanta holds a few grudges aimed at AC Milan, another city bordering Bergamo.
