Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid History

Atletico Madrid was formed in 1903, just one year after the founding of Real Madrid. The first-ever Derbi Madrileño took place in 1906, as Los Blancos claimed a 2-1 win. In the debut campaign of La Liga in 1929, Real Madrid beat Atletico home & away but eventually lost out to inaugural champions FC Barcelona.

The Spain centre-forward made a return to his city of birth in January 2019, when he signed for Atletico initially on loan and then on a long-term contract.

• Theo Hernández made a controversial switch from Atletico to Real Madrid in 2017. The young left-back played 23 times for the first-team before AC Milan came calling in 2019.

• Marcos Llorente made 39 appearances for Real Madrid, having risen through the club's youth ranks. He moved to Atletico in 2019, for a reported transfer fee of €30m, and has since made more than 185 appearances for Los Rojiblancos. Llorente also made his debut for Spain in 2020.
