Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich History

The first meeting between these teams came in the 1965/66 Bundesliga season, two years after the German top flight had undergone a reboot. Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have gone on to become the two most successful football clubs in Germany, accounting for more than half of the 60+ Bundesliga titles to date.

Bayern are, by some distance, the most decorated club in the land. The Bavarian giants clinched the Bundesliga title for a record-extending 33rd time in 2023, of which all but one have come since 1969. BVB, meanwhile, celebrated an eighth league crown in 2012, but have failed to add to their collection since then.

Both of these German heavyweights have previous successes in Europe to look back upon. Bayern have reached the pinnacle of European football on no fewer than six occasions, of which the first three occurred during the European Cup era. Die Roten claimed UEFA Champions League glory in 2001, 2013, and 2020, while Dortmund won this prize for the first time in 1997.

Dortmund and Bayern contested the UEFA Champions League final in 2013. Arjen Robben scored the winning goal as the Bavarians ran out 2-1 winners at Wembley Stadium, making amends for their shortcomings against Chelsea 12 months prior.

Particularly in recent times, several players have moved directly from Dortmund to Bayern. These names include:

• Mario Götze moved to Dortmund in 2001, aged 8, and developed through the ranks until making his first-team debut in November 2009. Götze's potential was unleashed under the tutelage of manager Jürgen Klopp, leading to the attacking midfielder switching to Bayern in 2013 when the Bavarian giants triggered his €37m release clause.
