Inter Miami History

Inter Miami CF was officially founded in 2018. It is owned and presided over by David Beckham, who in 2013 exercised the clause to purchase an expansion team for $25 million, as agreed in his player contract with Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007.

The Herons first took part in a Major League Soccer season in 2020, though the campaign was abruptly postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2022, Inter Miami finished 6th out of 14 teams in the Eastern Conference but lost to New York City FC in the first round of the MLS Cup play-offs.

2023 was another historic year for Inter Miami as the men in pink captured the club's first major trophy success. Lionel Messi led his new teammates to victory in the Leagues Cup, defeating local rivals Orlando City SC along the way before overcoming Nashville SC on penalties in the final.

Since 2020, Inter Miami home matches have been played at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. This venue is being used until the club's long-term home ground, Miami Freedom Park, has completed construction.

Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami CF on a free transfer in 2023 as Beckham and fellow executives, brothers Jorge and Jose Mas, managed to lure the global icon to Florida.

Messi had been linked with a return to former club FC Barcelona following a two-year spell at French side PSG, but the Argentina superstar opted to commit to the MLS franchise based in Fort Lauderdale.

The World Cup winning captain was soon followed to Miami by Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, two seasoned Spain internationals and Messi's long-serving teammates at Barca. Luis Suarez also agreed to join the Herons ahead of the 2024 season.
