The Supercoppa Italiana, which is known as the Italian Super Cup by some, is the first piece of silverware a side can win in Italy as it is played for before the start of the Serie A league season. Recent editions of the tournament, though, have been held in different countries in the winter months, therefore showing the numbers of fans that want to see the action. The competition has always been able to attract plenty of spectators as it sees the Serie A winner and the Coppa Italia winner (traditionally) square off against each other, whilst it also represents the first competitive fixture of the season as well.
Whilst the Supercoppa Italiana will host the winners of the two main tournaments in Italy, there have been a couple of sides to have won the competition on more than one occasion as they have been extremely successful in domestic action. For example, Juventus FC has won the competition on no fewer than eight occasions, whilst AC Milan has managed to lift seven titles in their history. Inter Milan and SS Lazio have at least five titles apiece, whilst AS Roma and SSC Napoli both have at least two titles to their name.
There have been many memorable moments within the history of the Supercoppa Italiana, with many standing out in the memories of fans for varying reasons. Whilst the possibility of shock results are rather limited because of the way the competition is scheduled, there have been a number of classic moments.
One such memory that remains rather vivid for fans in Italian football was AC Milan’s victory in the 2016 edition of the competition. I Rossoneri became the first runners-up of the Coppa Italia to lift the title when they beat Juventus on penalties. They featured in that tournament because I Bianconeri won both the Coppa Italia and Serie A the previous season.
As the Supercoppa Italiana usually features some of Italy’s top sides, there are a number of superstar names to have featured in previous editions of the competition. For example, Paulo Dybala has managed to score at least four times in his appearances for Juventus, whilst the likes of Andriy Shevchenko, Alessandro Del Piero, Samuel Eto’o and Carlos Tevez have all proven to be prolific in the past. Cristiano Ronaldo has also featured heavily for the Old Lady in recent editions.
Jose Mourinho, Massimiliano Allegri, Antonio Conte and Carlo Ancelotti are just a handful of the world-class managers to have had a role on the touchline in previous Supercoppa Italiana matches, therefore providing not only the best players but also the best managers in the country at the time as well.
Italian Super Cup 2023/24 ticket prices on the market will usually cost an average of £85 per ticket and as low as £35 per ticket.
