Lionel Richie Biography

Lionel Richie was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1949 and initially considered becoming a priest before opting to pursue a career in music. Having formed a number of R&B bands, he first made a significant move into the mainstream with the Commodores, where he was the singer and saxophonist for the band.

The band went on to sell over 70 million records worldwide and were famed for a number of iconic tracks, including, Easy, Three Times a Lady and Still. Richie left the band to concentrate on his solo career in the early 1980s, a decision that very much paid off.

Lionel Richie released his self-titled debut solo album in 1982, and it reached number three on the US Billboard charts. This came after his successful duet with Diana Ross, with Endless Love becoming Richie's first solo number-one song in the US, which was followed by Truly the same year.

His second studio album, Can't Slow Down, proved a massive success, selling over 20 million copies, including 10 million in the United States alone. The album included the worldwide smash hit All Night Long and was followed by his biggest-selling track, Hello.

His next album was similarly successful, with Dancing On the Ceiling going to number one in the United States, along with its eponymous single. In 1985 his hit song Say You, Say Me, earned Lionel Richie an Oscar for Best Original Song as well as a Golden Globe.

It would be another decade before Lionel Richie released a new studio album, Louder Than Words, being released in 1996 to strong critical acclaim. In 2012 Lionel Richie released his tenth studio album with Tuskegee proving a moderate hit.

In 2018 he joined as a judge on American Idol, a position that has helped win over a whole new selection of fans.

Lionel Richie has achieved a great deal over the course of his storied career including winning four Grammy Awards and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. He has also won ten American Music Awards.
