Liverpool vs Everton History

The foundations of this Merseyside derby were essentially laid even before Liverpool FC had been founded. Everton initially played its home games at Anfield, a plot of land owned by businessman John Houlding. A dispute led to Everton vacating the grounds and relocating to Goodison Park in 1892, allowing Houlding to form a new team based at Anfield.

Liverpool FC was thus established and these nearby clubs would first share a pitch in 1894. Everton were the more successful of these two teams in the early years of the Football League, partly due to being a founder member of the competition, winning the third edition of the First Division in 1890/91.

Liverpool, however, began to catch up to their rivals and also soon became an overall contender in English football. The Toffees, though, were the last champions of England before WWII broke out in 1939, winning a fifth First Division title to reinstate Everton above Liverpool’s tally of four.

The Reds rose to prominence in the 70s, first under Bill Shankly and then his successor Bob Paisley. Liverpool were the team to beat during this period, with multiple First Division and European Cup successes.

Paisley retired in 1983 and the tide subsequently shifted as Everton enjoyed a brief spell of dominance in the mid-80s. Howard Kendall was manager when the Toffees won two league titles and one FA Cup in the space of four years.

Liverpool won the First Division thrice more but then endured a 30-year wait to be crowned champions of England for a 19th time, until Jürgen Klopp’s side won the club’s maiden Premier League title in 2020.

Merseyside Derby Stats and Mutual Connections

Liverpool icon Ian Rush is the highest-scoring player in Merseyside derby history, with no fewer than 20 goals against Everton. The former Wales forward is widely considered royalty at Anfield, having scored a club-record 336 goals for the Reds. Rush made 649 appearances across a 15-year spell as a Liverpool player.

Steven Gerrard netted 10 times in 33 matches versus his boyhood club's local rivals, including a hat-trick in this fixture during the 2011/12 Premier League campaign.

Despite the major rivalry between the teams, a surprising number of individuals have ties to both the Reds and the Toffees.

• Peter Beardsley joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in 1987, for a British record transfer fee of £1.9m. The England striker won two league titles in his four years at Anfield before moving directly to Merseyside rivals Everton.
• In the Premier League era, Nick Barmby was an Everton player for four years until making a controversial switch to Liverpool in 2000. The midfielder retired with 342 Premier League appearances to his name, having also donned the colours of Tottenham Hotspur, Middlesbrough, Leeds United, and Hull City.
• Conor Coady progressed through the youth system at Liverpool, but made only two appearances for the senior team before leaving his boyhood club in 2014. Coady signed for Wolves and played 317 times for the West Midlands outfit, but also enjoyed a season-long loan at Everton, before transferring to Leicester City in 2023.
• Rafael Benítez was hired as Liverpool manager in 2004 and spectacularly won the UEFA Champions League at the end of his first season in charge. The Spaniard remained Reds boss until 2010 and he later took up the same role at Everton in 2021.
• Jamie Carragher spent the entirety of his playing career at Liverpool, amassing a total 737 appearances for the first-team and serving the club for more than two decades. The 38-cap England international is widely regarded a Reds hero, however it’s no secret that he was an Everton supporter in his youth. Having grown up in the 80s, it’s fair to assume Merseyside derbies would've been bittersweet occasions in the Carragher household.

Liverpool vs Everton Head-to-Head

To date, these teams have contested more than 240 competitive meetings. Their first on-field encounter came in the 1894/95 First Division and it saw Everton claim a 3-0 win at Goodison Park.

Merseyside Derby Memorable Moments

Liverpool earned a resounding 4-0 win in this fixture during the 2013/14 season. Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge, and Luis Suárez were all on the scoresheet as Liverpool recorded its largest margin of victory over their local rivals for more than 30 years.

The same scoreline ensued in April 2016, in what was Jürgen Klopp’s first time in the dugout for a Merseyside derby. Sturridge was again amongst the scorers, as were Divock Origi and Philippe Coutinho on this occasion.

This fixture produced six first-half goals in December 2019 as the hosts raced to a 4-2 lead at the interval. Georginio Wijnaldum placed the icing on the cake with the only goal of the second period.

In October 2023, Mohamed Salah netted twice in front of the Kop to hand the Reds a precious 2-0 win against their bitter foes.
