New Order History

New Order were formed in 1980 in Manchester very much in the face of adversity. Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris made up the nucleus of Joy Division with Ian Curtis as the band's lead singer.

The group were a major influential act and were a rock band with post-punk leanings, but when Ian Curtis killed himself, the rest of the band were left to pick up the pieces, and they dug deep and did so by forming New Order, who went on to become a hugely successful act with a massive fanbase worldwide.

Keyboardist Gillian Gilbert joined the band in 1980, and New Order released their debut album, Movement, in 1981 and went on to then release the hugely successful Power, Corruption & Lies, an album considered one of the best of the 1980s. In the early part of the decade, the band released a slew of successful singles, including Temptation, Confusion, Thieves Like Us and Blue Monday.

These songs still form a key part of the band's live act, along with Joy Division songs that they happily play to their adoring fans.

Further hit albums followed with Low Life, Brotherhood and Technique, all proving successful, with singles like Bizarre Love Triangle and True Faith being massive dance hits, with New Order moving into a more electronic direction.

1993 saw the release of Republic, the band's most successful album to date, including singles Regret, Ruined in a Day and World (The Price of Love).

After an eight-year hiatus, the band released Get Ready in 2001 and won over a whole new crowd, and their tenth studio album, 2015's Music Complete, proved that the band were still very capable of being trendsetters in their own right.

In 2011, Tom Chapman replaced Peter Hook as the band's bass player, and in 2023, both New Order and Joy Division were nominated to join the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band's 1983 hit Blue Monday was officially the biggest-selling 12-inch single of all time and is still considered among the most iconic tracks and very much a genre-defining track.
