Sunderland supporters are a loyal bunch who have stuck behind their team through thick and thin. Even after the Black Cats succumbed to relegation from the Premier League in 2017, and subsequently from the EFL Championship the following year, the Stadium of Light continued to boast attendances of more than 40,000.

The Black Cats have spent some time away from the English top flight, particularly during the early years of the Premier League as well as from 2017 onwards. Sunderland came close to a return to the top flight in 2023, but lost to Luton Town in the Championship playoffs.

Sunderland AFC History

The club was founded in 1879, initially under the name Sunderland and District Teachers, but it was renamed to Sunderland A.F.C. shortly thereafter. The Black Cats took part in the 1890/91 First Division, just the third edition of the competition after the Football League had been established.

By 1896, Sunderland had been crowned First Division champions three times in the space of four years. SAFC claimed a sixth league title in 1936, one year before winning their first FA Cup.

Since then, however, the Wearside outfit have not tasted all too much success. Sunderland celebrated another FA Cup triumph in 1973, though this would ultimately be the club’s last major piece of silverware for more than 50 years.

Immediately after returning to the top flight in 1999, Sunderland finished 7th in back-to-back Premier League campaigns under head coach Peter Reid.

Sunderland Rivals

Sunderland’s arch rivals are Newcastle United, with both clubs situated in the county of Tyne and Wear in North East England. The teams contest the Tyne-Wear derby, which is taken extremely seriously by every football fan in the region.

Sunderland’s home ground is the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats moved here in 1997, having played at Roker Park for the best part of a century. Switching to a new stadium saw the Black Cats almost double their seating capacity, with a 48,707 capacity at the Stadium of Light.
