Bringing the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA was no easy feat, and it took a while to secure their place in the Western Conference, with the expansion team finally joining in 1980.
The team, under head coach Dick Motta, suffered losing seasons in each of their first three seasons in the NBA but then went on a run of five successive playoff finishes, falling to the Los Angeles Lakers on three occasions and the Portland Trail Blazers and the Seattle SuperSonics on the other two seasons.
