Wales National Football Team History

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) was established back in 1876, the same year the national team played its first competitive match against Scotland. Wales boast the third-oldest national football team in the world, and most of the side's initial games were played against fellow United Kingdom nations England, Scotland and Ireland.

The FAW first became a member of FIFA in 1910, and later gained affiliation with UEFA in 1954. Cymru first played at the FIFA World Cup in 1958, and reached the quarter-finals despite not winning any of their three group matches.

Wales have largely underachieved on an international scale, and didn't feature at another major tournament until Euro 2016. The Dragons remarkably advanced to the semi-finals of the showpiece event, having topped their group which also comprised England, Slovenia and Russia. Wales edged past Northern Ireland in the Round of 16 and then defeated Belgium, 3-1, in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, the fairytale came to an end in the semis with a 2-0 loss to eventual champions Portugal.

In 2022, Wales played at the World Cup for the first time in more than 60 years. The nation's best placement in the FIFA world rankings came in 2015, when the Dragons climbed into the top 10 for the first time in history.

Best Wales Football Players

Wales have been blessed with a handful of talented individuals over the years, though seldom has there been a crop of world-class Welsh talent in the same age group.

Stars of yesteryear include the likes of Ian Rush, Mark Hughes and Ryan Giggs. Said players represented some of the finest teams in the English Premier League, with Giggs winning a record 13 Premier League titles with Manchester United. Hughes also played for Man United as well as Chelsea and FC Barcelona. Rush, meanwhile, spent much of his playing career at Liverpool and he scored 28 goals in 73 matches for Wales.

Gary Speed earned no fewer than 85 caps for Wales, and he also enjoyed spells with Leeds United, Everton and Newcastle United in the English top flight.

Aaron Ramsey was just 17 when he made his debut for the national team in November 2008. The midfielder became his country's youngest captain in 2011, aged 20 years and 90 days at the time. Ramsey played for prominent European teams such as Arsenal and Juventus, before returning to boyhood club Cardiff City in 2023. He has made more than 80 outings for the Dragons, and he was an integral part of their progression to the semi-finals at Euro 2016.

Gareth Bale is without doubt the most talented Wales player of his generation, and arguably of all time. The Cardiff-born sensation made his name at Tottenham Hotspur, subsequently earning a world record £85m transfer to Real Madrid in 2013. Bale became a five-time UEFA Champions League winner during his time in the Spanish capital, prior to a brief spell with Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC. He starred for his country at Euro 2016 and went on to amass a total 41 goals in 111 appearances – both record tallies for the Wales national team.

Wales National Team Stadium

The Millennium Stadium (Principality Stadium) hosted the home games of the Wales national team from 2000-09. This venue has a capacity just shy of 74,000, making it one of the largest stadiums across the UK.

The Cardiff City Stadium became the home of the Dragons in 2009. The first international game held at this ground saw Wales take on Scotland in November 2009, with 13,844 spectators in attendance. Also the home of Cardiff City, the stadium can hold a 33,000 capacity.
