By using this Turf Moor seating plan, you can better identify the most ideal seats to purchase at this fantastic venue.

Burnley vs Manchester United History

1892 was the year when these clubs first met on the pitch. Manchester United – known as Newton Heath LYR at the time – were defeated 4-1 by Burnley, a founding member of the Football League four years prior.

In 1901, Burnley and Man United battled it out in the First Round of the FA Cup. Following a goalless stalemate, the tie ended 7-1 in favour of Burnley.

The teams reconvened, eight years later, in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. With a side that included legendary Wales forward Billy Meredith, Man Utd won by three goals to two before going on to lift the Cup for the first time.

They met again in the FA Cup, more than half a century later, in 1965. Man United won the Fifth Round tie at Old Trafford, 2-1, with Denis Law on the scoresheet. The Red Devils progressed to the semi-finals but they were knocked out by eventual runners-up Leeds United.

Most matches between Burnley and Man United during the 20th century came in the old First Division, though that’s not to say they didn’t have a fair share of contests in the second tier of the English football pyramid.

On top of the 130+ competitive meetings between these teams, there are also several players who have represented both clubs over the years:

• David May joined Man United from Blackburn Rovers in 1994. He made more than 115 appearances for the Red Devils and was part of the club’s treble-winning campaign of 1998/99, before moving to Burnley on a free transfer in 2003.

• Andy Cole signed for Man United in 1995, joining from Newcastle United. The England striker went on to make 275 appearances in Man Utd colours and he enjoyed great success in M16. In 2008, towards the final years of his decorated career, Cole moved to Burnley for a brief loan spell from Sunderland.

• Phil Bardsley graduated from the Manchester United Academy but he was limited to just 18 appearances for the senior team. Upon leaving Old Trafford in 2008, the Scotland right-back switched to Sunderland and later Stoke City prior to a five-year stay at Burnley.

• Tom Heaton also graduated from the Manchester United Academy, having joined aged 16. He departed the club in 2010, without having featured for the first-team, and later on was purchased by Burnley. The goalkeeper remained at Turf Moor for six years before rejoining his boyhood club in 2021.

• In 2023, Man Utd acquired Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley.

Burnley vs Manchester United Head-to-Head

Compared to last century, meetings between these teams have been relatively infrequent since 2000.

Their first clash of the 21st century came in the fourth round of the 2002/03 League Cup. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored in a 2-0 victory for Man Utd, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side went on to reach the final but would lose to arch rivals Liverpool.

Burnley were promoted to the Premier League in 2009 and met Man United in the subsequent campaign, 33 years after the teams had last contested a top-flight encounter. The Clarets recorded a famous 1-0 victory over the then-defending Premier League champions, and thus collected a first league win over the Red Devils since 1968.

In December 2019, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford each found the net as Man United won by two goals to zero at Burnley.

More recently, Bruno Fernandes netted a volley in this fixture as the visitors left Turf Moor with a slender 1-0 win in the 2023/24 season.
