Burnley vs Tottenham Hotspur History

The first meeting between these clubs came in the First Round of the FA Cup in 1906. Played at White Hart Lane, Tottenham Hotspur won by two goals to zero.

Three years later, the teams reconvened in the same competition as Burnley were the victors in their Third Round tie. The Clarets, however, were knocked out the following round by eventual champions Manchester United.

The 1913/14 season was the first in which Burnley and Tottenham met in the English top flight, with either side winning its home fixture.

In 1961, they battled it out in the FA Cup semi-finals. Spurs got the better of Burnley in a 3-0 victory at Villa Park, before going on to beat Leicester City in the final.

The following year, Tottenham returned to the FA Cup final with Burnley as the opposition. The north London outfit won, 3-1, to claim back-to-back titles at Wembley.

To date, these teams have shared a pitch on more than 110 occasions and most of these have been played in the top division of the English Football League.

In addition, there are some notable players who have been involved with both these clubs, namely:

• Kieran Trippier moved directly from Burnley to Tottenham in 2015. Spurs triggered the £3,5m release clause in Trippier’s contract following the Clarets’ relegation to the EFL Championship.

• Aaron Lennon signed for Tottenham in 2005 and he made more than 360 appearances for the Lilywhites. After 10 years in north London, the former England winger moved to Burnley and featured 87 times across two spells with the Clarets, before hanging up his boots in 2022.

• Joe Hart spent two years at Burnley, following a 12-year association with Manchester City, after which he joined Spurs on a free transfer in 2020.

Burnley vs Tottenham Hotspur Head-to-Head

In 2009/10, following Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League, these teams contested a top-flight meeting for the first time in more than three decades. In this fixture, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale had put Spurs two goals to the good before the hosts netted four times to produce a memorable comeback win.

Tottenham won 3-0 at Turf Moor in 2017/18, courtesy of Harry Kane’s hat-trick. The following season, Ashley Barnes netted the winning goal as the Clarets earned a 2-1 victory over Spurs.

Heung-min Son scored a hat-trick in this fixture in the 2023/24 campaign, boosting the visitors to a 5-2 win.
