West Bromwich Albion vs Leeds United History

Founded back in 1878, West Bromwich Albion were one of the founding members of the Football League and therefore have significantly more experience to draw upon compared to Leeds United, founded in 1919.

The first time these teams clashed was in the 1924/25 season of the First Division, as West Brom beat Leeds both home and away, and this remained a regular fixture up until the outbreak of World War II.

In 1947 the sides shared a pitch in the FA Cup for the first time. In this Third Round tie West Brom claimed a 2-1 win at The Hawthorns. The teams didn't meet in this competition again until 1967, when Leeds recorded a resounding 5-0 victory over the Baggies in the Fourth Round and went on to reach the semi-finals that year.

When they next faced off in the FA Cup, in 1973, Leeds once again emerged victorious over West Brom and progressed all the way to the FA Cup final. Ultimately though, the Peacocks were beaten by Sunderland at Wembley Stadium.

This remained a frequent fixture for much of the 1970s and early 80s, until both teams were relegated to the Second Division. 20 years went by before West Brom and Leeds reconvened in the top flight, by which time it had rebranded from the old First Division to the Premier League.

West Bromwich Albion vs Leeds United Head-to-Head

The first time Leeds Utd visited The Hawthorns in the Premier League era, in the early weeks of the 2002/03 season, the away side earned a 3-1 victory. Harry Kewell, Lee Bowyer and Mark Viduka were all on the scoresheet for LUFC.

Leeds soon fell out of the Premiership and wouldn't return until 2020, while West Brom were more prominent in the top flight during the 2010s. The teams met a number of times in the EFL Championship, such as in the 2019/20 campaign in which they both achieved automatic promotion to the Premier League.

The following season saw Leeds pick up a commanding 5-0 victory in this fixture, with Raphinha rounding off the scoring at The Hawthorns. This was the Peacocks' biggest win over West Brom since 1967.

Exactly three years after that result, back in the Championship, the Baggies beat Leeds 1-0 thanks to Grady Diangana's first-half goal. Both teams would subsequently reach the promotion play-offs that term.
