The Hawthorns has been the home of West Bromwich Albion ever since the stadium first opened its doors in September 1900.

The first time these teams shared a pitch was back in February 1900. Southampton defeated West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup quarter-finals, 2-1, on their way to reaching the final, although that culminated in a losing effort versus Bury.
Eight years later the Baggies and the Saints met again in the FA Cup, this time in the Second Round. Southampton ran out 1-0 winners and went on to reach the semi-finals but ultimately lost out to eventual champions Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Two decades passed before West Brom and Southampton contested a league fixture for the first time, doing so during the 1927/28 season of the Second Division. Only in 1967 did the two sides clash in the First Division, and this would become a regular fixture for much of the 1970s and 80s.
