Death Cab for Cutie were formed in 1997 by Ben Gibbard, initially as a solo project. This was expanded when the group welcomed in Chris Walla, Nick Harmer and Nathan Good and their debut album, Something About Airplanes, was released in 1998.

Their second album, We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes, failed to secure much airplay, but Death Cab for Cutie rose in prominence when they released their third album, The Photo Album, which earned great reviews.

In 2003 the band released Transatlantacism, which is considered by most fans as among the band's best and it was their last before they were signed to Atlantic. Their major label debut, Plans, saw them secure a top ten album on the US Billboard charts, with the record selling over a million copies in the United States alone.

It earned the band their first Grammy nomination, indeed they have gone on to secure eight Grammy Awards nominations.

The album contained a number of strong singles, including Soul Meets Body, the band's first US Billboard hit single. Three years later, the band returned with a number-one album, with Narrow Stairs performing well around the world and putting them on the mainstream map.

Codes and Keys was another successful album release, charting at number three in the US, and that was followed by Kintsugi in 2015. 2018's Thank You for Today was well received and then four years later, in 2022, Death Cab for Cutie released their tenth album, Asphalt Meadows with lead single Roman Candles performing well.

As well as being the frontman of Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Gibbard has helmed a number of other projects, including The Postal Service, and he released his debut solo album, Former Lives, which also charted well in the United States.
