Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid History

Real Madrid was founded in 1902, little over 12 months before the formation of Atletico Madrid. Los Blancos were the winners of the first-ever Derbi Madrileño in 1906, by two goals to one. In the debut campaign of La Liga in 1929, Real Madrid beat Atletico home and away but eventually lost out to inaugural champions FC Barcelona.

Without a doubt Real Madrid are the more successful of these two sides. Not only are they the most decorated club in Spanish football, but no team has won more European titles than Los Blancos. RMCF became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, doing so in 2017 prior to winning the title for a third season on the bounce 12 months later.

Atletico are 11-time champions of La Liga, including two titles under manager Diego Simeone. The Argentine coach also guided Los Rojiblancos to three UEFA Europa League triumphs in 2010, 2012 and 2018, as well as the UEFA Champions League final in 2014 and again two years later.

Madrid Derby Stats and Mutual Connections

No player has scored more goals in this derby than Cristiano Ronaldo. For many years Alfredo di Stéfano was previously the holder of this record with 15 goals in 28 games against Atletico.

Ronaldo equalled the tally of Di Stéfano in 2015, and netted a total 22 goals versus Los Rojiblancos throughout his nine-year stay in the Spanish capital. The Portugal icon scored no fewer than three hat-tricks against Atletico, including one in the 2016/17 Champions League semi-finals.

• Santiago Bernabeu, the namesake of Real Madrid's iconic stadium, spent all but one year of his playing career with Los Blancos. The Spanish striker joined Atletico in 1920 but only played a single game for the club before re-signing for Real Madrid.
• Álvaro Morata signed for Real Madrid in 2008, aged just 15 at the time. He made 95 first-team appearances and won multiples trophies across his two stints with Los Blancos, on either side of a two-year spell at Juventus. Morata moved to Chelsea in 2017, for a transfer fee in the region of €65m. The Spaniard returned to his city of birth in January 2019, completing a loan move to Atletico before sealing a permanent switch to the club the following year.
• Theo Hernández left Atletico for Real Madrid in 2017. The young left-back racked up 23 first-team appearances under Zinedine Zidane before he was sold to AC Milan. Hernández subsequently earned a maiden cap for France in 2021.
• Marcos Llorente was born in the Spanish capital and he joined Real Madrid at a young age. The midfielder developed in the club's youth teams and went on to make 39 outings for the senior team. Llorente switched to Atletico in 2019, for a reported transfer fee of €30m, and has since played more than 185 times for Los Rojiblancos. He also made his debut for Spain in 2020.
