AS Saint-Etienne History

The club was founded in 1919, though only in the 1930 did French football turn professional. Saint-Etienne emerged following World War II, winning their first league title in 1957.

ASSE enjoyed fruitful spells in the 60s & 70s, winning four league titles in either decade. The French side finished runners-up in the 1976 European Cup Final, with a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

Robert Herbin is perhaps the single most lauded individual in the club's history. He amassed more than 450 senior appearances for Saint-Étienne before also going on to take up the role of first-team manager. Herbin guided Les Verts to four league championships as well as to the European Cup Final in 1976.

In more recent times Christophe Galtier spent almost eight years as Saint-Etienne manager until 2017, while Claude Puel & Olivier Dall'Oglio have also since been placed in charge of the first-team.
