Spain secured their maiden World Cup title thanks to an extra-time winner from Iniesta.

Spain suffered a stunning group-stage exit as defending champions in Brazil 2014, before Round of 16 penalty defeats to hosts Russia in 2018 and Morocco in 2022.

North America 2026

In the opening weeks of the 2026 World Cup, Spain went under the radar. Partly because they had no real major attacking star in their ranks and expectations were low when they drew 0-0 with Cape Verde in their opening match.

It was a similar story in the final. Argentina struggled to get hold of the ball against a dominant Spanish side who needed a Ferran Torres goal in extra-time to win the World Cup for the second time.

European Championship History

Spain won the first European Championship that they took part in, winning in 1964, a tournament that they hosted. They failed to qualify for 1972, and were eliminated at the quarter-final stage in both 1968 (by England) and 1976 (by West Germany).

In 1984 a talented Spanish side fought their way to the final before they came unstuck against hosts France.

Back-to-Back Success

In 2008 and 2012, the Spain national football team earned the ultimate place in the history of the game by winning back-to-back UEFA European Championship tournaments, which sandwiched their 2010 FIFA World Cup win.

In the round of 16, Georgia were brushed aside 4-1 before Spain needed extra time to see off Germany 2-1 in Stuttgart. France took the lead through Kolo Muani in the semi-finals but Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo quickly replied for a 2-1 win.

The final was watched by over 65,000 people in the Olympiastadion in Berlin. After a goalless first half, Nico Williams put Spain in front. Cole Palmer equalised with seventeen minutes to go. Mikel Oyarzabal won the match and Euro 2024 with a goal four minutes from time.
