The 1986–87 season was the first in which those teams which had missed out on automatic promotion to the next tier were granted the opportunity to earn an additional promotion slot via the play-offs. At the time, prior to the start of the Premier League era, this division (League One) was still known as the Third Division.
Swindon Town won the inaugural Third Division play-off final, defeating Gillingham in what was the third match between the teams in the space of a week. The play-off final was originally a two-legged tie, with either side hosting the other. The maiden edition saw Swindon and Gillingham end 2-2 after two legs, forcing a replay at Selhurst Park where Swindon ran out 2-0 winners.
Walsall and Port Vale were the play-off winners in the next two seasons, before it was decided that future editions would take place at Wembley Stadium in a one-legged play-off final.
The play-off final was staged at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff from 2001-06, during which time Wembley underwent renovations. It was during this time (ahead of the 2004/05 season) that the Third Division was rebranded to League One.
The League One Play-off final has emerged as one of the most hotly-anticipated fixtures in English football, raking in tons of interest beyond the supporters of the participating clubs.
The 2004/05 edition, the first following the rebranding of the Third Division to League One, saw Sheffield Wednesday clinch promotion to the Championship in dramatic fashion. The Owls were trailing Hartlepool United with less than 10 minutes remaining, until substitute Steven MacLean scored a penalty to send the game into extra-time. Glenn Whelan and Drew Talbot both netted in extra-time, to send Sheffield Wednesday up to the Championship.
In the 2013/14 season, the League One Play-off final pitted Leyton Orient against Rotherham United. The latter came from two goals down to force the match into extra-time and subsequently penalties. Rotherham ended 4-3 winners in the shootout, thanks to goalkeeper Adam Collin keeping out two of Leyton Orient's spot-kicks.
More recently, Charlton Athletic took on Sunderland in the 2018/19 League One Play-off final, with 76,155 in attendance at Wembley. The Black Cats took the lead inside the opening five minutes but Charlton equalised through Ben Purrington before half-time. The final was all set to be decided in extra-time or penalties, until Patrick Bauer scored in the dying embers of second-half stoppage time for Charlton Athletic to claim bragging rights and rise up into the Championship.
Winners of the Sky Bet League One Play-off final in recent seasons have included the likes of Blackpool, Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, and Oxford United.
Teams such as Shrewsbury Town and Lincoln City have also recently featured in the League One play-off finals, but have failed to achieve victory in this prestigious match at Wembley Stadium.
