The Swiss national football team has had an interesting history, on occasion proving capable of causing an upset and achieving a certain level of consistency while also giving the world stage a number of memorable players and matches over the years.
The Switzerland national football team made a fairly instant impact on the FIFA World Cup, getting to the quarter-finals in both 1934 and 1938, and they then hosted the tournament in 1954, a competition that is fondly considered one of the most exciting ever.
Here the Swiss once again got to the last eight, where they were then beaten 7-5 by Austria.
In 1962 and 1966, they qualified for the finals but lost all their group-stage games, and they then failed to qualify for every tournament until the 1994 World Cup in the United States. This period of relative failure surprisingly came during the lengthy career of Swiss legend Heinz Hermann, who racked up 118 national team caps between 1978 and 1991.
In the US, they drew with the hosts, beat Romania, and lost to Colombia in their group, and then fell to Spain in the Round of 16.
In 2006 they got back to the Football World Cup finals again, with star striker Alexander Frei assisting, as they lost in the Round of 16 to Ukraine on penalties, with Frei having netted against Togo and South Korea.
In 2014, 2018, and 2022 the Swiss lost in the Round of 16 again to Argentina, Sweden, and Portugal, respectively.
Switzerland made it to their first European Championship finals in 1996 and crashed out in the group stage; this is a feat they repeated in 2004 and 2008.
In 2016 in France, they went one better, losing to Poland in the last-16.
At Euro 2020 they overachieved by beating favourites France in the Round of 16 before unluckily losing to Spain on penalties in the quarters.
Switzerland just about managed to achieve automatic qualification for Euro 2024, despite having a significantly greater FIFA ranking and past experience at major tournaments compared to their group opponents Andorra, Belarus, Israel, Kosovo and Romania.
The Swiss won four of their 10 qualifying matches which was ultimately enough to see Rossocrociati secure their spot at the finals in Germany.
Switzerland play their home games in a number of stadiums. These include the Kybunpark in St Gallen, the Stade de Geneve in Geneva, the Swissporarena in Lucerne, and the Stade Tourbillon in Sion.
