History of the USA National Soccer Team

The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) was established in 1913 and officially became a full member of FIFA the following year.

The first-ever official international fixture featuring the US men's national team came in 1916, away to Sweden, as the Americans won by three goals to two.

USA participated in the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930 and progressed to the semi-finals of the 13-team tournament, losing to eventual runners-up Argentina.

At the following edition of the World Cup in 1934, USA crashed out at the Round of 16 stage to eventual champions Italy.

U.S. Soccer became a member of CONCACAF when the confederation was formed in 1961.

1985 was a historic occasion as the United States women's national team played its first official fixture. To date, USA is the most successful nation in women's international soccer.

The U.S. men's national soccer team achieved its highest FIFA ranking of 4th in 2006.

USA Men's National Team at the FIFA World Cup

USA took part in the first two editions of the FIFA World Cup but, after crashing out of the group stages in 1950 - despite a famous win over England, they then went 40 years without appearing at the showpiece event.

The 1994 World Cup was hosted by the United States, with nine host cities. USMNT ended 3rd in its group, behind Romania and Switzerland, but advanced to the knockout stages as one of the best-ranked third-placed teams.

Ultimately, USA lost to eventual champions Brazil in the last-16. This game was played on the 4th of July as the host nation was defeated by a single goal.

In 2002, USMNT reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since the competition had been expanded to 32 teams. The Stars and Stripes finished 2nd in their group, behind co-hosts South Korea and ahead of European sides Portugal and Poland.

Landon Donovan scored in a 2-0 victory over neighbors Mexico in the first knockout round, but USA then tasted defeat at the hands of Germany.

A poor showing at the 2006 tournament was followed by the USMNT reaching the Round of 16 in South Africa 2010. They topped their group, which also housed European heavyweights England, before losing out to Ghana in extra-time.

USA gained a measure of revenge by defeating Ghana during the group stage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, steering them to the knockouts once again. However, they were then on the losing side against Belgium in the last-16.

In 2022, USA again advanced from the groups to qualify for the Round of 16 but lost to another European powerhouse in the form of the Netherlands.

Hosts Again At The 2026 World Cup

The United States played host again at the 2026 FIFA World Cup together with neighboring countries Canada and Mexico.

Mauricio Pochettino's side got off to a cracking start, beating Paraguay and Australia. A defeat to Turkey in the final group game didn't make a difference to progression as they still won their group and Bosnia and Herzegovina were beaten 2-0 in the round of 32.

Controversially, after his sending off against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Folarin Balogun saw his suspension suspended for the round of 16 against Belgium, which fired up the Red Devils who duly knocked USA out the World Cup 4-1.

The USA played host to the best attended World Cup ever and all their games were must-see events. Pochettino's side left their mark on this World Cup and undoubtedly grew the game further on home soil.

The likes of Christian Pulisic, Malik Tillman, Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards and Tyler Adams became household names and should see plenty of interest in Team USA long after the 2026 World Cup.

USA Men's National Team at Other Major Tournaments

The USMNT featured in the Copa America event of 1993, having been invited to participate in the South American showpiece together with Mexico.

Both teams were once again invited to take part in the following edition in 1995. USA topped its group – ahead of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile – before beating Mexico on penalties in the quarter-finals. Defeat to Brazil ensued in the semis, followed by another loss to Colombia in the third-place match.

The United States hosted the 2016 Copa America, which was the centenary edition of the continental tournament. USMNT equalled its best-ever finish of fourth-place, beating Ecuador in the quarter-finals and then losing to Argentina in the semis. The third-place match once again ended in favour of Colombia.

USA won the CONCACAF Gold Cup for a seventh time in 2021, the same year the USMNT celebrated success in the CONCACAF Nations League for the first time. The latter is a competition they won three consecutive times.

Best USA Soccer Players

Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey are the highest-scoring players in the history of the U.S. men's national soccer team, with 57 goals apiece. Both players earned more than 140 caps for USMNT.

Dempsey spent more than six years playing in the English Premier League, first for Fulham FC and then with Tottenham Hotspur. The striker later returned to his homeland to join Seattle Sounders and played there for the best part of five years before hanging up his boots in 2018.

Donovan, meanwhile, spent the bulk of his playing career in Major League Soccer and made more than 300 appearances for local side Los Angeles Galaxy. He also enjoyed a brief loan spell at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and then with English club Everton.

Cobi Jones is the most-capped player in USMNT history with a total 164 games for his country. He made his international debut in 1992 and brought an end to his playing career 16 years later.

Other well-known USA players of yesteryear include goalkeeper Tim Howard, who was a Manchester United player for four years until 2007, and midfielder Michael Bradley.

United States Men's National Team – Stadium

The USMNT doesn't have a dedicated home stadium like most other national teams do. Instead, the Stars and Stripes have contested international fixtures in more than 27 states across the country.

California has hosted more USMNT matches than any other state, with venues such as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Dignity Health Sports Park and the Rose Bowl.

Other popular stadia within the United States include AT&T Stadium in Texas, as well as Sporting Park in Kansas City and Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.

USMNT played at no fewer than 14 different home venues in 2023 alone.
