Real Madrid vs Barcelona History

Both of these clubs were formed around the start of the 20th century, though it wasn't until the 1930s that Real Madrid and FC Barcelona would begin to meet regularly.

The Spanish top flight was established in 1929 and, to date, Real Madrid and Barcelona account for more than half of the 90+ league titles in the history of this competition. Barca were the inaugural champions of Primera División, now known as known as La Liga, though it is Real Madrid that would go on to become the most successful football team across Europe.

With more than 250 (competitive) meetings behind them, these teams are more than familiar with each other.

Real Madrid and Barcelona played out a six-goal thriller in April 2005, with six different names on the scoresheet. Zinedine Zidane opened the scoring and then Ronaldo put the home side two goals to the good. Samuel Eto'o halved the deficit but Raúl and Michael Owen restored the two-goal cushion before Ronaldinho salvaged another consolation goal for the visitors.
