Stevie Wonder Biography

Stevie Wonder has been an integral part of the musical mainstream since the tender age of 11, and he has proven an astonishing success for the best part of sixty years and is still very capable of blowing the roof off of any arena or stadium that he plays live.

Stevie Wonder's blindness happened soon after his birth though this was no barrier to his spectacular career. At the age of 11, he was signed by famed Motown CEO Berry Gordy, and his first studio album, The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie, was released in 1962. In 1963 his single, Fingertips - Part 2, went to number one in the US.

His output was prolific for the next decade, but his first truly iconic album came in 1972 when Talking Book was released. That album included the smash hit You Are the Sunshine of My Life and Superstition.

The following year, Stevie Wonder released Innervisions to a rapturous reception, and then in 1976, he released arguably his greatest-ever record. Songs In the Key Of Life was a number-one hit across the world, and the album has gone on to be considered among the best ever made.

It sold five million copies in the United States alone, and the ambitious double album won a host of awards. The album included a host of successful singles, including Sir Duke, Isn't She Lovely, As, and I Wish.

In the 1980s, Steve Wonder's star continued to shine with a string of hugely successful albums and hit singles, including I Just Called to Say I Love You, That's What Friends Are For, Part-Time Love, and Ebony and Ivory (with Paul McCartney).

He has continued to regularly release output until the present day, and his concerts are considered epic occasions, showing that even in his latter years, Stevie Wonder is a consummate professional performer and one of the greatest musicians to have ever picked up an instrument, or in his case, sat behind.

He has been honoured for his services to music with inductions into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2014 he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama at the White House.

Over the course of his extensive career, Steve Wonder has released 23 studio albums and has covered a range of genres while doing so. From R&B to soul, to gospel and funk, and on to jazz and just plain pop, Stevie Wonder has the range to do it all.
