Simply Red History

Having seen his initial route into music falter, with his Frantic Elevators failing to rise to the occasion, Mick Hucknall teamed up with Elliot Rashman and the finest session musicians to form Simply Red in 1985.

The band, backed by Mick Hucknall's voice, proved an instant early success with their debut album Picture Book, proving a hit in the UK and the US, and went on to sell over a million copies in both territories and secured the band their first Grammy nomination.

The album included the number one single, Holding Back the Years, and their fantastic debut single, Money's to Tight to Mention. Having enjoyed early success, the band's follow-up album, Men and Women, also charted well. Simply Red's third studio album, A New Flame, included another number one track, with If You Don't Know Me By Now going on to become a staple of their live shows.

In 1991 Simply Red released Stars, the band's biggest success. The album sold over three million copies in the UK alone and has gone on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time and led to the group winning three Brit Awards.

The album was shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Prize and is regularly added to lists of the best albums ever made. It is very much a record with a strong legacy. It would take another four years for Simply Red to release their next album, and Life was a strong success, reaching the top of the UK charts in 1995.

2023 saw Simply Red release their thirteenth studio album, with Time breaking into the top ten across Europe.

Simply Red have achieved a great deal over the course of their lengthy history, selling over 50 million albums and winning a hold of accolades, including two Ivor Novello Awards and a host of Grammy and MTV Music Award nominations.
