Diplo Biography

Thomas Wesley Pentz, aka Diplo (and on occasion, Wes Gully), was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in November 1978. He graduated from Hendersonville High School, and his early influences were home-grown rap artists. He spent much of his youth in Miami, and he became a DJ at the local radio station WPRK.

He came up with his alias due to his childhood fascination with dinosaurs, i.e. Diplo being short for Diplodocus.

At age 20, Diplo moved to India but returned to the US and started a collaboration with DJ Low Budget.

His debut album, Florida, was released in 2004 on Big Dada Records.

In 2008, he worked with M.I.A. on Paper Planes which really put his name on the map in relation to his incredible producing skills.

In 2009, Diplo released his first album as part of Major Lazer and has gone to great success with this side project, with hits like Lean On and Cold Water proving hugely successful.

Diplo has worked across a number of collaborations, be that in a side project as Major Lazer, Jack U, Silk City or with a host of big-name artists, such as Kanye West, Snoop Dog, Justin Bieber, Madonna, Chris Brown, Shakira, Beyonce and No Doubt, to name just a few.

He has produced a host of hugely successful albums over the course of his career to date, including work on The Weeknd's Starboy, Maroon 5's Red Pill Blues, Beyonce's Lemonade, Snoop Dogg's More Malice and Gwen Stefani's Hollaback Girl (a remix using a sample of Feira de Acari by Baile Funk).

In 2019, he released a studio album as part of LSD, a collaboration with Sia and Labrinth, which proved a big, albeit brief, success.

In 2022 he released his self-titled fourth studio album to much acclaim and as well as producing track after track of pure excellence and selling millions of records (either on his own behalf or as a producer), Diplo has also won a host of accolades.

In 2016, Diplo won his first Grammy Award, picking up the Best Dance Recording Award for Where U Now (with Skrillex and Justin Bieber). He also picked up a second Grammy Award that year for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
