This is typically the biggest match of the German football season, pitting the Bundesliga's two most popular teams against one another. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have fought out several title races in recent years, and this particular fixture represents a mighty occasion on the football calendar.

The first meeting between Bayern and Dortmund came in the 1965/66 Bundesliga season, two years after the German top division had been rebooted. The pair have become the two biggest and most successful football clubs in Germany, accounting for more than half of the 60+ Bundesliga titles.

Bayern are, by some distance, the most decorated club in the land. Die Roten claimed top-flight honours for the 33rd time in 2023, of which all but one have come since 1969. Dortmund, meanwhile, are eight-time champions of Germany, with more than half of them in the Bundesliga era.

Both Bayern and Dortmund have previously achieved success in Europe. The former have reached the pinnacle of European football on no fewer than six occasions, of which the first three were during the years of the European Cup. No player has scored more goals in Der Klassiker than Robert Lewandowksi (32). The Poland striker played 187 times for Dortmund before switching to the Bavarians on a free transfer in 2013. • Mats Hummels was only 6 years-old when he joined the Bayern Munich Academy. He progressed all the way to the senior team, making his first-team debut in August 2006. Hummels made just one other senior appearance before signing for Borussia Dortmund, initially on loan followed by a permanent switch to the Westfalenstadion. The centre-back made a name for himself at Dortmund before completing a €38m transfer back to Bavaria in 2016. He re-signed with BVB three years later and to date has garnered more than 490 appearances for Die Borussen.
• Emre Can rose through the youth teams at Bayern but featured just seven times for the senior team. The defensive midfielder enjoyed spells with Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool, and Juventus before joining Dortmund in 2020.
• Niklas Süle signed for Bayern in 2017, from Hoffenheim, and he made 171 outings
• Bayern acquired Marcel Sabitzer from RB Leipzig in 2021, though several managerial changes at the Bavarian club meant the Austria midfielder struggled for minutes. Sabitzer was sold to Dortmund in the summer of 2023, following a brief loan spell at Manchester United.
