U2 History

U2 were formed in 1976 and their debut album Boy, was released in 1980 by Island Records this was followed by October a year later. Their third album, War, topped the UK charts and saw the band start to make a name for themselves in the United States.

The Unforgettable Fire included the hit single Pride (In the Name of Love) which went to number three in the UK Single Charts.

Joshua Tree

In 1987 their hit album The Joshua Tree proved a groundbreaking moment in the history of the band.

The album has gone on to sell 25 million records and included hit singles With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, both going to number one in the US.

Achtung Baby

In 1991 the band released arguably their best record with Achtung Baby proving a massive success both commercially and critically.

The album went on to sell eight million copies in the United States alone and includes hits like One and The Fly.

After something of a lull, at least from a critical perspective, the 2000 release of All That You Can't Leave Behind was another massive seller as was the follow-up in 2004, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, both albums supported by huge world tours.

Beautiful Day went to the top of the UK singles chart in 2000 as did single Vertigo four years later.

World Tour

This spawned one of a host of astonishingly successful live tours that the band have enjoyed over the decades.

That tour, Vertigo, saw U2 play 131 shows across 2005 and 2006 with a combined audience of over four and a half million.

U2 are regularly voted the best live act around and that is down to a number of factors. Firstly the sheer size of their musical catalog makes every concert something of a greatest hits bonanza.

Award-Winning

In 2005 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and to date they have won an amazing 22 Grammy Awards. Rolling Stone have since gone on to place the band among their list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
