New York City FC History

New York City Football Club was founded in May 2013. The franchise is a subsidiary of the City Football Group (CFG), which itself is majority owned by Abu Dhabi United Group, owners of English Premier League team Manchester City.

NYCFC made its Major League Soccer debut in 2015, together with fellow expansion team Orlando City, though managed to win just 10 out of 34 games in the Eastern Conference. The following season was a lot more promising for New York City FC, as the Blues finished 2nd in the Eastern Conference.

Another 2nd-place finish in 2017 saw New York City FC qualify for the conference semifinals, but Patrick Vieira's side ultimately lost to Columbus Crew. NYCFC reached the conference semifinals for a third successive year, only to crash out to Atlanta United. Despite winning the Eastern Conference in 2019, NYCFC still failed to progress beyond the conference semifinals with defeat to Toronto FC.

In 2021 New York City FC won the MLS Cup for the first time. The Blues ended 4th in the Eastern Conference to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs, before beating the Philadelphia Union and Portland Timbers to secure a first major trophy for NYCFC. Taty Castellanos scored 23 goals, including three in the Playoffs.

NYCFC subsequently participated in the CONCACAF Champions League and went on to reach the semi-finals, but suffered a 4-2 aggregate defeat to eventual champions Seattle Sounders.

New York City FC Best Players

David Villa was announced as the first-ever player of NYCFC in June 2014. The striker had heaps of experience under his belt, having become a World Cup winner with Spain before also playing alongside Lionel Messi at FC Barcelona. Villa would go on to score 80 goals in 126 matches for New York City FC, and he remains the club's most prolific goalscorer.

A month after Villa had arrived in the Big Apple, Frank Lampard became the second Designated Player of NYCFC. The former England midfielder had spent 13 years at Chelsea where he scored a club record 211 goals in 648 games. Lampard played just 31 times for New York City FC, though he contributed 15 goals across the 2015 and 2016 MLS seasons.

In July 2015 another World Cup winner was added to the ranks as Andrea Pirlo became NYCFC's third Designated Player. The ex-Italy international joined from Juventus and he had also previously represented both AC Milan and Inter.

USMNT goalkeeper Sean Johnson made 206 appearances for NYCFC, making him the most-capped player for the club at the time of his departure to Toronto FC in 2023.

Former Argentina attacker Maxi Moralez has played more than 190 matches for NYCFC, while countryman Taty Castellanos scored 59 goals in 134 games before moving to Italian side Lazio in 2023.

Former Spain international Andoni Iraola signed for New York City FC in 2015, after ending a 12-year spell with Athletic Bilbao where he amassed more than 500 appearances for the Basque club.

Jack Harrison featured 61 times for NYCFC before switching to parent club Manchester City in 2018.

New York City FC Rivalries

The Hudson River Derby pits NYCFC against local rivals New York Red Bulls. The first edition of this derby was played in May 2015 at the Red Bull Arena located in New Jersey, 20 miles away from Yankee Stadium across the Hudson River.

New York City FC have also developed a feud with the Philadelphia Union, with both sets of supporters desperate for their team to prevail when they meet. NYCFC defeated the Union in the 2021 Eastern Conference final, however Philadelphia emerged victorious at the same stage the following year.

New York City FC Stadium

Most home games of NYCFC take place at Yankee Stadium, which is also the home of MLB team New York Yankees. Generally, more than 30,000 supporters fill this venue for matches. When Yankee Stadium is unavailable, NYCFC sometimes compete at Citi Field. Situated 10 miles away from the home of the Yankees, Citi Field can accommodate more than 40,000 spectators.

These venues are both temporary homes of NYCFC while the club's new stadium is built. New York City FC Stadium is expected to open in 2027.
