Copa del Rey History and Format

The Copa del Rey, or the King's Cup, is the main domestic football cup competition in Spanish football. The competition was founded in 1903, and Athletic Bilbao were the winners in each of the first four editions.

This competition is a knockout tournament in which clubs from various tiers of Spanish football, including La Liga, Segunda División, and lower divisions, all compete in a single-elimination format. In recent years, the format was changed so that only the semi-final is a two-legged tie.

The Copa Del Rey has been won by more than 15 clubs throughout its history. However, there've been a small number of clubs to have dominated the tournament. FC Barcelona have lifted this title on no fewer than 32 occasions, while Athletic Bilbao won the Copa del Rey for a 24th time in 1984. Real Madrid claimed a 20th title in 2025, double the tally of rivals Atletico Madrid at the time.

This tournament has certainly produced a number of memorable moments throughout its history. The upsets and ‘giant-killings’ are what make the Copa Del Rey such a special tournament.

In 2007, Getafe CF produced an unimaginable comeback against the mighty Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-finals. La Blaugrana won 5-2 at the Camp Nou in the first leg but Getafe refused to lie down for their Catalan opponents, beating a star-studded Barcelona team, 4-0, in the return leg to progress to the final.

Gareth Bale's incredible solo goal for Real Madrid against Barcelona in the 2014 Copa del Rey final also stands out as a truly magical moment in the history of this famous competition.

The 2019/20 edition of the tournament provided fans with a number of dramatic upsets. Then-Segunda Division side, Mirandes, managed to beat three La Liga teams in a row on their way to the Copa del Rey semi-finals. They defeated Celta Vigo, Sevilla and Villarreal in consecutive rounds, before being edged out by Real Sociedad in the last-4.

In 2026, Albacete caused the big upset as they beat Real Madrid on home soil. A few weeks later they were narrowly beaten by FC Barcelona.
