When thinking of the Copa del Rey, Athletic Club Bilbao is a name that will be one of those that is immediately associated with the competition. The Spanish side have been one of the most successful teams to have ever taken part in the club competition over the years and have gone on to produce some incredible moments in their pursuits to win the cup. With a number of games being played at the San Mamés Stadium each season they are in the competition, it is no surprise that the 53,289 capacity stadium becomes the place to be in Bilbao when they are played.

Simply known as Athletic, or Bilbao, have had a number of players that have grabbed the headlines over the years having all come from the Basque region. Individuals such as Inaki Williams, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Iker Muniain, Fernando Llorente, Javi Martinez and Fernando Amorebieta have all featured over the years, whilst men like Marcelo Bielsa have led the team as manager at one point as well.

Athletic Club Bilbao have won the Copa del Rey on no fewer than 23 different occasions, therefore winning it more than most other sides in Spain can ever account for. The Basque outfit lifted the trophy in 1903, 1904, 1910, 1911, 1914, 1915, 1916, 1921, 1923, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1943, 1944, 1944–45, 1949–50, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1969, 1972–73 and in 1983–84.

As well as winning the tournament on numerous occasions, the Spaniards have also reached the final on 14 other occasions, therefore making the showpiece at least a mammoth 37 times in their history to date.

Indeed, there are plenty of memorable moments that have happened in the Copa del Rey that have involved Athletic Club Bilbao and their storied success in the competition over the years, although recent campaigns have perhaps left fans desiring a little more from their side.

Moments have been few and far between for the Basques in the modern game, although they have had a couple of final appearances since the early 2000s. The club reached the 2008/09, 2011/12 and 2014/15 finals, however faced FC Barcelona in all three appearances.
