Biography - Foo Fighters

The history of the Foo Fighters is, of course, inextricably linked to that of another rock band behemoth, Nirvana.

Nirvana

Following the death of lead singer Kurt Cobain, drummer Dave Grohl left the then-disbanded Nirvana to start his own project, namely the Foo Fighters, in 1994.

Initially, there was some talk of Grohl going on to join Pearl Jam, but this was seemingly only speculation.

He joined forces with bass player Nate Mandel, drummer William Goldsmith, and guitarist Pat Smear, with Grohl playing lead guitar in his new venture.

They made their live debut in February 1995, playing new material and instantly clicked and have not looked back since, making a name for themselves and becoming a huge rock act to this day.

Debut Album

Dave Grohl's new band released their self-titled debut album in July 1995 on Capitol Records, to great critical and commercial success, with the record selling well as a d lead single, This is a Call, becoming very much a band anthem.

The Colour and the Shape followed two years later, which included the infectious hits Monkey Wrench and Everlong, but it was There is Nothing Left to Lose that really saw the band mature into a massive act.

Learn to Fly

The Foo Fighters scored their first big Billboard Singles chart hit with Learn to Fly, and the likes of Generator and Breakout also did well, and the band continued to evolve into a very strong live act that was already selling out massive arenas.

One By One

Their fourth studio album, One by One, went to number three on the Billboard charts and spawned big singles in the shape of All My Life, Low, and Times Like These.

Best of You

2005's Best of You achieved global acclaim and is a constant on the band's setlist to this day.

In 2011 the Foo Fighters earned their first ever Billboard number one album when Wasting Light performed amazingly worldwide.

Taylor Hawkins

Sadly, the band lost talented drummer Taylor Hawkins when he died in March 2022 in Colombia, but the band bravely soldiered on to perform amazing concerts the following year and continue to commemorate their fallen band member.

But Here We Are

In 2023, the Foo Fighters released their eleventh studio album, and this was the first to be released following the death of Taylor Hawkins.

It received amazing acclaim from critics and fans alike and is considered among the best albums they have released to date.
