Jennifer Lopez Biography

Jennifer Lynn Lopez was born in the Bronx in New York City in 1969 and was seemingly destined for stardom from an early age. She worked as a dancer after studying all manner of styles, from flamenco to jazz to ballet.

From 1991 she was a fly girl dancer In Living Color, which helped bring her exposure and proved those dancing lessons were a great investment.

As an actress, she secured her first meaningful role in South Central, a TV show, in 1994 and rose to prominence in the title role of the biopic Selena, playing singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez. Arguably, her breakout role came opposite George Clooney in Out of Sight in 1998, and in 1999, she elected to put more effort and concentration into a music career, a move that has served her well, to say the least.

Jennifer Lopez released her debut studio album On the 6 in 1999 to rapturous praise from fans and critics alike. The album reached the top ten on the US Billboard charts and sold over two and a half million copies in the United States alone. The album included her debut single If You Had My Love, which went to number one in the US and number four in the UK.

Her talents as a singer were undisputed, and as a live act, she was very much the complete package, not least because of her training as a professional dancer. In 2001, she released her second album, J.Lo, and this saw her secure her first US Billboard number one album, selling almost four million copies in the United States.

2001 was something of a pinnacle year for Jennifer Lopez. It saw her J.Lo album and her film, The Wedding Planner, meaning she became the first individual to have a number-one film and album in the US in the same week.

That album included the hit singles Love Don't Cost a Thing, Play, I'm Real (with Ja Rule), and in 2002 her This Is Me...Then was another huge success and spawned perhaps Jennifer Lopez's most famous single, Jenny, from the Block and All I Have (with LL Cool J), which was another number one single in the United States.

A three-year hiatus followed before Jennifer Lopez released her fourth studio album, Rebirth, which included the tracks Get Right and Hold You Down. Her remix album, J to that L-O, was another massive success, also released in 2002.

In 2007, Jennifer Lopez released her first full-length Spanish album, and Como Ama una Mujer, unsurprisingly, proved a huge success.

In 2022, Jennifer Lopez married Ben Affleck, whom she had originally dated between 2002 and 2004; this led to renewed interest in the American singer and songwriter.

A string of hugely successful albums and singles have subsequently secured goddess status for Jennifer Lopez, and in 2024, she is set to release her first studio album in almost a decade with This Is Me. Now set to be supported by a massive tour.
