Southampton supporters are a truly passionate bunch devoted to following their team play up and down the country. Despite being relegated from the Premier League in 2023, Southampton continued to receive the backing of their loyal fanbase in the EFL Championship.

Southampton earned a strong reputation as a strong Premier League outfit but succumbed to relegation following an 11-year spell in the top flight.

The Saints lost their top-flight status after finishing rock bottom with just 25 points. Russell Martin was appointed to lead the senior team following a flurry of managerial changes that culminated in the club's relegation to the Championship.

Martin lead Southampton back to the Premier League via a Championship play-off final win over Leeds in May 2024.

Southampton FC History

The club was founded in 1885, as St. Mary's Y.M.A., before the name was altered to St. Mary's F.C., and then Southampton St. Mary's; club directors eventually settled on the name Southampton F.C. in 1897.

Only in 1920 did the Saints first appear in the Football League, taking part in the inaugural season of the Third Division, and they were promoted to the Second Division within just a couple of years.

Southampton remained in the Second Division until dropping back down to the Third Division in 1953, before rising back to the second tier seven years later. In 1966 Southampton achieved promotion to the First Division and subsequently debuted in the English top flight.

The south-coast club returned to the Third Division in 1974, two years before winning a major trophy for the first time. The Saints captured the FA Cup title following a 1-0 victory over favourites Manchester United in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Southampton qualified for the UEFA Cup (precursor to the Europa League) multiple times in the 1980s, but didn't enjoy much success on their European conquests.

The Saints reached the FA Cup final in 2003, but ultimately lost 1-0 to Arsenal at the Millennium Stadium. They also progressed to the FA Cup semi-finals in 2018 and 2021, losing to the eventual champions (Chelsea and Leicester City) on each occasion.

Southampton played Europa League football in the 2016/17 season, having finished 6th the previous Premier League campaign, but exited the competition at the group stage.

Matt Le Tissier leads the Saints' all-time appearances charts, with 477 outings in Southampton colours. The former England international also scored 179 goals, more than any other player in the club's history.

Jason Dodd and James Ward-Prowse are others who made more than 400 appearances for Southampton.

Southampton FC Rivalries

Southampton's arch rivals are Portsmouth FC, with both of them situated in proximity of England's south coast. The teams contest the South Coast derby, though they haven't met in the top flight since 2005.

The Dell served as the club's home ground for more than a century, from 1898-2001, until the all-seater St Mary's Stadium opened its doors in August 2001.

The Saints announced a whopping 31% increase in their cheapest season ticket prices for the 2024/25 campaign – more than any other club in the Premier League that season.
