The French Cup final of 1989 will live long in the memory for several reasons. Jean-Pierre Papin was the hero as he scored a hat-trick for Olympique Marseille to overcome AS Monaco by four goals to three. This would also be the last time Marseille won the Coupe de France for more than 25 years.
The 2009 Coupe de France final was another memorable occasion, as Guingamp became the first second-tier side to lift this trophy in 50 years. Guingamp came from behind to beat Stade Rennais, 2-1, and claim a maiden French Cup.
In 2016, the Coupe de France final was contested by bitter rivals Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille. Four goals were scored in the second half, including two by Zlatan Ibrahimović, as the Parisiens ran out 4-2 winners. The result also saw PSG equal Marseille's record of 10 triumphs in the French Cup.
PSG are the most decorated team in the history of this tournament, with no fewer than 15 titles. The Parisiens also reached the Coupe de France for a record 20th time in 2024.
The next most successful competitor in the Coupe de France is none other than PSG's rivals Marseille. Les Phocéens lifted the French Cup for a 10th time in 1989, at which point Paris Saint-Germain had won this title only twice, though Marseille have failed to get their hands on the trophy since then.
Saint-Étienne and Lille have captured the Coupe de France six times apiece, while Monaco and Lyon are each five-time winners.
PSG captain Marquinhos became the first player to achieve seven winner's medals in the French Cup, surpassing former teammate Marco Verratti (6). The Parisiens' dominance in the 2010s meant that a number of their players became five-time winners of the Coupe de France, among them Thiago Silva and Edinson Cavani.
Former France striker Jean-Pierre Papin netted a hat-trick in the 1989 Coupe de France final, as Marseille defeated Monaco, 4-3, at the Parc des Princes.
André Cheuva became the first coach to win the Coupe de France on four occasions, doing so with Lille during the 1940s and 50s. Guy Roux equalled this tally in 2005 when he guided Auxerre to a fourth triumph in this competition.
In more recent years the likes of Laurent Blanc, Unai Emery, Thomas Tuchel, and Mauricio Pochettino have all steered Paris Saint-Germain to Coupe de France glory.
