The Scottish national football team has a rich history that dates all the way back to 1872 when they played their first-ever international, against England, ending 0-0 in Partick.
The Scottish national team secured qualification for their first World Cup finals tournament in 1954, where they lost both games without scoring a goal. Four years later, in Sweden, they picked up their first-ever point, drawing with Yugoslavia before losing to Paraguay and France.
Their next shot at making an impact in the finals came in 1974 when they performed wonderfully well to score a win over Zaire and draw with both Brazil and Yugoslavia, but Scotland were ultimately unable to progress due to their inferior goal difference.
In 1978 arguably the most iconic moment in Scotland national football team history occurred when they beat the mighty Netherlands in their final group game, with goals from Kenny Dalglish and Archie Gemmill giving them a famous 3-2 win, which ultimately wasn't enough to get them to the next phase.
They subsequently qualified for the 1982, 1986, and 1990 finals and, on each occasion, fell short of getting out of their group, and in 1998, in France, they did so again.
Indeed Scotland's overall record in finals tournaments is fairly poor, with the team winning four of their 23 games, and they haven't been back to the finals since 1998 but certainly have a stronger set-up now than in recent years.
Scotland's history in the UEFA European Championship finals is somewhat similar to their World Cup record.
In Sweden 1992, they beat the CIS but lost to both Germany and the Netherlands. At Euro 1996 in England, Scotland lost to the hosts but did beat Switzerland and drew with the Dutch, though that wasn't enough to advance from their group.
2020 proved similarly fruitless. A memorable draw with England was sandwiched with limp losses to the Czech Republic and Croatia.
Scotland secured automatic qualification for Euro 2024 by finishing in the top two of their qualifying group, alongside Spain. The Scots won five of their eight games, claiming 17 points from a possible 24, to finish ahead of Cyprus, Georgia and Norway.
Set to take part in the Euro finals for only the fourth time, Scotland are ready to test themselves against the continent's best teams.
Scotland play their home national team matches at Hampden Park in Glasgow. The purpose-built stadium has undergone a great deal of renovation since it was opened in 1903 and has a current capacity of 51,856.
The Scottish Football Association is also based in Glasgow.
