Los Angeles FC History

Los Angeles Football Club was founded in 2014 following the dissolution of Chivas USA, also based in California.

Nicknamed the 'Black and Gold', LAFC debuted in Major League Soccer in the 2018 season and quickly established itself as a contender for the playoffs. The California-based team claimed victory in its first MLS game against Seattle Sounders in March 2018.

In 2022, Los Angeles FC won the Western Conference regular season as well as the Western Conference playoffs, before also going on to triumph in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

LAFC ended runners-up in the 2023 playoffs, losing to Columbus Crew in the MLS Cup final.

Los Angeles FC Best Players

Carlos Vela was announced as the club's first designated player in 2017. Having previously played for Arsenal and Real Sociedad in Europe, the Mexico forward brought heaps of experience to the newly-formed team and would go on to score 93 goals in 188 appearances prior to leaving LAFC at the end of 2023.

Diego Rossi scored the club's first goal in MLS, against Seattle Sounders in March 2018. The Uruguay winger netted 59 goals in 121 games before leaving to Turkish side Fenerbahce.

Los Angeles FC have also boasted some notable players from overseas. Gareth Bale agreed to join the Black and Gold in 2022, following almost a decade at Real Madrid where he became a five-time winner of the UEFA Champions League. The Wales attacker featured just a handful of times for LAFC, but helped the team secure the MLS Cup before bringing an end to his playing career.

Italy veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini signed for LAFC at the same time as Bale, spending 18 months at the club before also hanging up his boots. Cristian Tello, formerly of FC Barcelona, also had a brief spell at the Black and Gold in 2022.

Former France captain Hugo Lloris became a player of Los Angeles FC in 2024. The goalkeeper spent 12 years at Tottenham Hotspur, making almost 450 appearances for the Premier League side, and he led his country to FIFA World Cup glory in 2018.

Los Angeles FC Top Managers

Bob Bradley was appointed as the club's first manager in 2017 and he remained in the role until November 2021.

Bradley was succeeded by Steven Cherundolo as LAFC's head coach. Cherundolo led the team to success in 2022, winning the MLS Cup to cap off a fruitful season in which the Black and Gold finished top of the overall standings.

Los Angeles FC Rivalries

The Los Angeles derby, also known as El Tráfico, sees LAFC take on LA Galaxy. Despite being established more than 20 years after the Galaxy, Los Angeles FC have made up for lost time by scoring precious victories over their local rivals. The teams' respective stadiums are separated by less than 12 miles.

Los Angeles FC Stadium

LAFC home games take place at BMO Stadium, located in the Exposition Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles, California.

This venue opened its doors in 2018 and it has a 22,000 capacity. Matches at BMO Stadium produce great atmospheres, attributed to the passionate fans of Los Angeles Football Club.
