About Turkey Tickets 2023/24

Turkey played their first national team match in 1923 when they opened their international account with a 2-2 draw with Romania in Istanbul.

FIFA World Cup History

Turkey's involvement at the FIFA World Cup is patchy, to say the least, but on the occasions that they have made it through to the finals, they've actually excelled, far beyond what many would have expected.

The Turkey national football team did qualify for the 1950 World Cup but then withdrew, and in 1954 they made their finals bow in Switzerland.

Twice Beaten by West Germany

They lost their first group game to West Germany 4-1, in Bern, despite taking the lead. They then thrashed South Korea 7-0 in Geneva, and they went into a group play-off with West Germany; on this occasion, they were roundly annihilated 7-2 in Zurich, and the victors went on to win the tournament.

Turkey then failed to qualify for a World Cup finals tournament until 2002, when they made it to Japan and South Korea and had a tournament to remember.

Japan & South Korea 2002

Turkey's first group game saw Hasan Sas score a surprise opener against Brazil, only to in the end lose the game after being reduced to nine men.

They drew their next game with Costa Rica and then needed to beat China to progress, which they managed with a comfortable 3-0 victory.

In the Round of 16, an Umit Davala goal saw off Japan, and an extra-time goal from Ilhan Mansiz gave Turkey a narrow win over Senegal in the quarter-finals to set up a semi with Brazil. On this occasion, a Ronaldo goal was enough to break Turkish hearts.

The team regrouped and beat South Korea in the third-place play-off to complete a hugely successful World Cup campaign. They have not qualified for the showpiece event since.

European Championship History

Turkey have been marginally more consistent in UEFA European Championship action, getting to the finals in 1996 and 2000, being eliminated in the Group Stage in the first and quarter-finals in the second.

In 2008 Turkey did magnificently well to fight their way to the semi-finals, where they lost to a last-gasp Philipp Lahm goal in a five-goal thriller.

In 2016 and 2020, two group stage eliminations were secured, though definite progress has been in terms of just making it to the finals.

Turkey qualified for Euro 2024 by topping their group with 17 points from eight games. Ay-Yıldızlılar finished ahead of Croatia and Wales, with Armenia and Latvia also involved in Group D.

Turkey National Football Team - Home Stadium

Turkey play their home national team games at various locations, with the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul being a popular favourite and an is one of the most iconic venues in European football.

This famous ground was the scene of the UEFA Champions League final in 2005, when Liverpool produced a remarkable comeback against AC Milan to win Europe's most coveted prize. Ataturk also hosted the Champions League final in 2023 as Manchester City beat Inter Milan.

Ay-Yıldızlılar also occasionally play home games in Adana, Bursa, Gaziantep, Diyarbakir, and Eskisheir.
