South Korea National Team History

The Korea Football Association (KFA) was established in 1933 but only gained affiliation with FIFA in 1948, the same year the South Korea national football team played its first international friendly.

The Tigers of Asia won the AFC Asian Cup in 1956 and again four years later, though in more recent years they have had to settle for the silver and bronze medals.

South Korea have struggled to make a lasting impact at the World Cup, though the 2002 event held on home soil will remain a memorable summer for supporters of the national team.

South Korea at the FIFA World Cup

The South Korea national team haven't enjoyed a great deal of success at the World Cup, advancing to the knockout stages on only a few occasions. Their first appearance at the showpiece event was at the 1954 edition and their next would only come 32 years later.

The Tigers of Asia finished in fourth place at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which South Korea co-hosted with Japan. South Korea thus became the first Asian team to reach the World Cup semi-finals and this remains their best result at the tournament.

The home supporters were a major factor behind the team's progression, filling the stadiums to the brim whenever South Korea were in action. Victory over Italy in the last-16 and then against Spain in the quarter-finals, making history for the KFA.

Since then, South Korea made it to the Round of 16 at both the 2010 & 2022 World Cups, losing out to Uruguay and Brazil, respectively.

• Son Heung-min has played more than 125 times for South Korea and assumed the captaincy in 2019. The attacker began his senior career in the German Bundesliga, with spells at Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen, paving the way for a move to Premier League outfit Tottenham in 2015.

• Kim Min-jae first ran out for his national team in 2017. The central defender joined Napoli in 2022 and the following year he completed a transfer to Bayern Munich for a fee in the region of €50m.

In the history of South Korean football, Hong Myung-bo has made the joint-most appearances for the Tigers of Asia, with 136 outings. He shares the record with Cha Bum-kun, who is also the country's top goalscorer of all time with 58 goals.

The Tigers of Asia usually play their home matches at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. This 66,000-seater venue hosted three games at the 2002 World Cup, include the semi-final tie between South Korea and Germany.
