LA Galaxy History

Los Angeles Galaxy was founded in 1994, and it was one of 10 teams to compete in the inaugural season of Major League Soccer.

As of 2024, LA Galaxy is the most successful team in MLS history. The California-based team has won the MLS Cup on no fewer than five occasions, and also captured the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 1999.

In recent years, however, LA Galaxy have slipped down the MLS standings. The 2023 season saw Galaxy end second-bottom of the Western Conference, winning just eight of their 34 games during the MLS regular season.

LA Galaxy Best Players

Cobi Jones has played more times for the LA Galaxy than any other player. The winger made more than 300 appearances during his 12-year stay at the club. He is also the most-capped USMNT player in history, with 164 international outings to his name. His compatriot Landon Donovan is the all-time top scorer for LA Galaxy, with 136 goals.

Galaxy have also been able to attract a host of international stars over the years, starting with the signing of David Beckham in 2007. The former England captain switched from Real Madrid and would pave the way for many other high-profile talents to relocate to MLS in the years to follow.

Ex-Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane joined Galaxy from Tottenham Hotspur in 2011, a few years before Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard also opted for a move to California. Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong followed suit, as did Zlatan Ibrahimović following spells with prominent European clubs including Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.

Brothers Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos both developed in the famed academy of FC Barcelona, La Masia, before going on to become full Mexico internationals. They both represented LA Galaxy towards the end of their respective playing careers. Their fellow countryman Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez joined Galaxy in 2020 and spent four years at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Former Brazil winger Douglas Costa has also run out for the LA Galaxy, having previously played for clubs such as Bayern Munich and Juventus.

LA Galaxy Top Managers

Sigi Schmid was in charge of LA Galaxy for five years until 2004, as the team won the MLS Cup and the CONCACAF Champions Cup under his tutelage.

Former Netherlands attacker Ruud Gullit had a brief spell as LA Galaxy manager but he was dismissed in 2008 following a poor run of results.

Bruce Arena was the head coach of LA Galaxy from 2008-16. He guided the team to three MLS Cup successes in 2011, 2012, and 2014.

Greg Vanney played more than 200 times for the LA Galaxy and he was appointed manager of the club in January 2021.

LA Galaxy Rivalries

LA Galaxy contest the Los Angeles derby, also known as El Tráfico. This derby pits the Galaxy against local rivals Los Angeles FC.

LAFC were founded in 2014, two decades after the birth of LA Galaxy, but have been more than capable of defeating their bitter rivals in recent years. The teams' respective stadiums are separated by less than 12 miles.

Dignity Health Sports Park has been the home ground of LA Galaxy since 2003 when the venue opened its doors. This stadium has a capacity of 27,000 people, significantly smaller than the Rose Bowl which hosted Galaxy's home games from 1996-2002.
