History of Ireland in the Six Nations Championship
The Irish Rugby football union team took part in the inaugural Home Nations Championship in 1883, which was the forerunner to today's Six Nations Championship.
They won their first title in this format in 1894, and their early form in the Five Nations series was fairly strong. The Irish side won three Five Nations titles between 1948 and 1951 but then went nearly a quarter of a century before tasting success again, doing so in 1974.
First Title
The Six Nations Championship was formed in 2000 with Italy joining the tournament, and Ireland finally won that title in 2009, doing so in style by taking the Grand Slam under the tenure of head coach Declan Kidney.
Brian O'Driscoll was key to that success, leading from the front and finishing the competition as the leading try scorer.
Back-to-Back Success
Back-to-back Six Nations triumphs followed in 2014 and 2015, with Australian head coach Joe Schmidt securing a great deal of success during his six-year period in charge.
2018 saw another Ireland Grand Slam as they finished way clear of the opposition, with Jacob Stockdale being among the heroes of that success.
2023 & 2024 Champions
2023 was another Ireland success, with Andy Farrell's side winning all five matches once again, this time pipping France to the famous trophy, securing the Six Nations Championship with a 29-16 round 5 win over England.
That win came off the back of sterling displays throughout the team and due to the on-field leadership of Irish captain Johnny Sexton.
Their title success, Ireland's first in five years, began with a crushing win over admittedly a struggling Welsh rugby team, with Farrell's men scoring four tries in a 34-10 win at the Principality Stadium. That was followed by a superb 32-19 victory over main rivals France in Dublin and an easy victory over Italy in Round 3.
They closed out their Grand Slam success with wins over Scotland and England.
In 2024, after a relative failure at the Rugby World Cup, Ireland once again stormed to the Six Nations title.
They opened the Six Nations 2024 with a brilliant win. 38-17 at the Orange Velodrome in Marseille, thanks to five different try scorers.
Dominant wins over Italy and Wales followed, before a surprise and extremely tight defeat to England at Twickenham Stadium.
On March 16, 2024, Ireland completed their Six Nations campaign with a 17-13 win over Scotland. In the final denouement, Ireland has the joint top try scorer in Dan Sheehan and three players in the top 10 points scorers: Jack Crowley, Sheehan and James Lowe.
Strong Showings in 2025 & 2026
2025 was something of a bump back to Earth for Ireland. Though the reigning champions only lost one game, they had to settle for third spot behind England and France.
Ireland finished runners-up in the 2026 Six Nations with four wins from five, claiming a fourth Triple Crown in five years after a 43-21 hammering of Scotland on Super Saturday, but missing out on the title when France snatched a last-gasp 48-46 win over England in Paris to pip them by two table points.
