About Republic of Ireland Tickets 2023/24

The Irish national team played their first match in 1924 when the Irish Free State beat Bulgaria in France in 1924.

On the whole, the Republic of Ireland have struggled to make a sustained impact in major tournaments, with some iconic exceptions.

FIFA World Cup History

Ireland failed to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup until 1990, and after their exploits in Italy, they returned home to a jubilant welcome from the Irish people, who were thoroughly proud of their Boys in Green.

Italia 90

Jack Charlton's side were drawn into a group with England, the Netherlands, and Egypt and started their campaign by drawing with the Three Lions in Cagliari.

They then drew with Egypt before pulling off a massive surprise by once again drawing, this time with the mighty Holland, thanks to a late leveler from Niall Quinn.

They then beat Romania after a thrilling penalty shootout before bowing out to Italy in the quarter-finals, having achieved far more than many would have expected.

Epic Victory Over Italy

In 1994 in the US, they once again overcame the odds to get to the finals and astonishingly beat Italy in their opener thanks to a Ray Houghton wonder strike. They then lost to Mexico, but a draw with Norway was enough to get them through, and they met the Dutch in the Round of 16, but they were easily beaten.

In 2002 they got to the finals in Japan and South Korea and pulled off a remarkable late draw against Germany, and got through to the Round of 16 again, this time losing to mighty Spain on penalties.

They have not qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals since.

European Championship History

The first time the Republic of Ireland made it to the European Championships finals was in 1988, where they once again met England, with Houghton scoring the winner, but a draw with the Soviet Union and defeat against the Dutch meant they were unable to progress.

In 2012 Ireland returned to the finals but lost every game in their group in Poland and Ukraine, and in 2016 they made amends.

Tasked with having to beat Italy in their final group game in order to secure a place in the Round of 16, Robbie Brady scored a memorable winner in a narrow win.

Brady netted again in their knockout clash with France after just two minutes, but Antoine Griezmann scored twice to break Irish hearts.

Republic of Ireland National Team - Home Stadium

The Irish football association national team play their home games at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin; the modern venue has a capacity of 51,711 and is used for various events outside the world of football.
