US Open History

One of the oldest tennis championships in the world, the US Open has a history spanning more than 140 years. Initially known as the United States National Championships, the inaugural edition of the tournament took place back in 1881.

It became one of four Grand Slam tournaments in 1923 when it was officially designated as a major tournament by the International Lawn Tennis Federation, though for many years only amateur players were eligible to take part. Only when the Open Era commenced in 1968 were professional tennis players also permitted to compete in the remodelled US Open.

Since 1978, the US Open has been held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, New York City. The competition had previously been staged at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills.

The 2023 US Open main draw welcomed a record 799,402 spectators, including sell-outs in all 25 sessions in Arthur Ashe Stadium, according to the United States Tennis Association.

Overall, the 2023 tournament saw 957,387 fans enter the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center over the 20 days encompassing both the main draw and US Open Fan Week. In addition, both the men's and the women's Championship sessions were the highest-attended Championship sessions in US Open history, with 28,804 and 28,143 spectators, respectively.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

Since opening in 1997 the Arthur Ashe Stadium has been the primary venue of the US Open tournament. The arena was posthumously named in honour of American tennis player Arthur Ashe, winner of the 1968 US Open.

Arthur Ashe Stadium has a 23,771 capacity, making it the world's largest tennis-only venue, and it has hosted the US Open final every year since 1997. To minimise weather-related delays, a retractable roof was installed in 2016.

The US Open final was previously contested at Louis Armstrong Stadium from 1978 until 1996. The old Louis Armstrong Stadium was demolished following the 2016 US Open, making way for a refurbished arena.

The venue reopened in August 2018 ahead of that year's edition of the US Open, featuring a retractable roof and an additional 4,000 seats. This marked the completion of the $600 million transformation of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Louis Armstrong Stadium has two levels: an upper bowl with over 7,000 unreserved general admission seats, and a lower bowl with 6,400 reserved seats. In total Louis Armstrong Stadium has around 14,000 seats.

US Open Winners

In the men's singles draw, Jimmy Connors became the first person to clinch five US Open titles in the Open Era (1968-present). This feat was later matched by Pete Sampras and Roger Federer.

Novak Djokovic became a four-time winner of this tournament in 2023, equalling the tallies of John McEnroe and Rafael Nadal. Tennis stars of yesteryear who have also conquered Flushing Meadows on multiple occasions include the likes of Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, and Andre Agassi.

The most successful women's champions in the Open Era are Chris Evert and Serena Williams, with six titles apiece. Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, and Steffi Graf are just a few other well-known competitors who have triumphed in the women's singles tournament.
