West Bromwich Albion History

The club was founded as West Bromwich Strollers in 1878, two years before renaming to West Bromwich Albion.

In 1888 West Brom became one of 12 founding members of the Football League, alongside the likes of Blackburn Rovers & Everton. WBA were crowned champions of the old First Division in 1920, and this remains the club's solitary top-flight league title.

The Baggies are five-time winners of the FA Cup although their most recent success came more than 50 years ago, in 1968. The 1981/82 season saw West Brom advance to the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, losing out to Queens Park Rangers & Tottenham, respectively.

The 2002/03 season was the first which saw West Bromwich Albion take part in the Premier League, a decade after the English top flight had rebranded from the old First Division. West Brom reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 2008, though they were ultimately knocked out by eventual champions Portsmouth.

More recently, WBA played eight straight seasons of Premier League football before succumbing to relegation to the EFL Championship in 2018. Carlos Corberán was appointed head coach of the Baggies in October 2022 and the Spaniard came close to guiding the team back to the Premier League in the 2023/24 campaign, reaching the Championship Play-offs.
